Goats Review
By Lisa Gauthier

Goats, written and performed by Alan Berks, is a hilarious personal memoir about his sojourn in Israel, “the most conflicted and confused country I’ve ever seen“ — a one-man show that keeps the audience’s attention throughout.

It starts when Berks is 22 and goes to Israel to see the Western Wall. He gets involved with a group for wayward Jews, which leads him back to his lady love in Chicago, which lands him back in Israel, alone, herding goats.

Berks performs in a highly animated, personable way that lets you know you are getting first-hand insights into another’s journal-like experiences. Berks can laugh at his own deepest despairing moments — and you will, too — and though he says his “revelations don’t always stick,“ through this touching show, maybe you can live vicariously for a couple hours.

The Basile festival continues through April 21, True to Scale and Goats continue, plus, opening next weekend are savant by Tony McDonald and Born to Goof, written and performed by Kevin Burke. Call 635.PLAY for tickets and times.
